Comparison of john smith and william bradford...styles of writing Many writers of today and of the past have many similarities and differences. Some of their similarities might be the same way of writing, such as mystery, fiction, non-fiction, or romance. Some differences in the way writers write might be the tone of their writing. Another difference might be the reason of why they are actually writing their information. William Bradford and John Smith were two writers back in the time of the pilgrims, the Indians, and settlements in the New World. They were both writers, but with few similar subjects and many differences. William Bradford writes of the New World settlements, and his personal account of it. He is a Puritan, so he tends to write more in relationship with God, and in personal journal-like entries. He also writes about his purpose, which was to inform the others back in England of his journey. Another purpose might be to document his victories and his hardships in the New World development. His man audience is the English settlers and the fellow Puritans. John Smith writes a mini-brochure about the New World and its development. His main purpose of this piece of writing is to persuade his audience. He is trying to persuade the English to leave from England and move to the beautiful land of America. He makes America seem luscious with green hills and plenty of food. This is in contrast with the writing of William Bradford because he doesn’t see the green hills. This is because he arrived on the shore of Cape Cod and only witnessed the sandy dunes and the salty ocean. The tone of a document sets the mood of the whole story. The tone that is set in the writings of William Bradford is basically solemn, slow, and with a sense of despair. The tone that is set by John Smith is very enthusiastic and very persuasive. The tone that is set affects the reader and the whole mood of the entire document. These writers are from the same time period. They are both writing about the same topic. But their purposes are totally different. This affects the readers entirely. John Smith’s article may tend to lure its readers to want to move to America, while William Bradford’s article might just flat out scare away the movers. These are just two ways of writing that many of the diverse writers use in the world.
